Lyon Apprenticeship

About the ice sheet (ICE DEVELOPMENT)

ICE DEVELOPMENT is a technology studio based in Lyon, specialising in complex web architectures and bespoke development. We don’t just design applications; we also manage their high-availability hosting and the security of our clients’ critical infrastructure.

We don’t do empty marketing talk: we’re a team of enthusiasts, builders and technicians (with a slight, self-confessed obsession with penguins). If you enjoy challenging yet supportive environments, you’ll feel right at home in our colony.

Your mission (should you choose to accept it)

With the support of our team of experts, you’ll be thrown straight into the deep end of infrastructure and managed services. Your role will be to play an active part in the ongoing maintenance, security and development of our servers

Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Deployment and configuration: Installing and configuring servers (primarily Linux Debian/Ubuntu, but also Windows).
  • Monitoring and maintenance: Monitoring infrastructure (Shinken, Nagios), managing backups and ensuring high availability.
  • Networking & Security: Helping to configure firewalls, managing certificates (Let’s Encrypt) and routing rules (NAT/PAT, DNS).
  • Automation & DevOps: Exploring and using automation tools (Ansible) to improve the reliability of our deployments.
  • Support & Troubleshooting: Resolving Level 1 and Level 2 technical issues via SSH console.

Your playground (The Stack Technique)

Don’t panic! We’re not looking for a rare gem who already knows everything. Here’s an overview of the ecosystem in which you’ll be working and developing your skills:

  • OS & Virtualisation: Debian, Ubuntu, Windows Server, Proxmox, VMware ESXi.
  • Web Servers & Reverse Proxy: Apache, Nginx, Varnish, Traefik, PHP/PHP-FPM configuration.
  • Databases: MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, SQL Server, ElasticSearch.
  • Networking & Security: pfSense, IPtables/Nftables, FirewallBuilder, mod_security (WAF), OpenVPN, DNS management (Bind).
  • Tools & DevOps: Ansible, Docker, GitLab, SVN, Bash scripting, Rsync, Rsnapshot.
  • Cross-functional services: OpenLDAP, Samba (AD-DC), Postfix, iRedMail, OwnCloud, SSL certificates.
  • Tracking & Ticketing: Redmine, GLPI.

The future penguin's profile

  • You are studying for a degree in Computer Science (2–5 years of higher education) with a specialisation in Systems and Networks.
  • You have a genuine affinity for the Linux world and aren’t (too) daunted by the command line.
  • You are curious, meticulous, and keen to understand ‘how things work under the bonnet’.
  • Ideally, you have a basic understanding of networking (IP, DNS, routing fundamentals).
  • You enjoy problem-solving and don’t hesitate to consult the documentation.

Why come sliding with us?

  • Real responsibilities: You won’t just be resetting passwords. You’ll be working on actual production servers.
  • Mentorship: You’ll be trained by experienced system administrators who love sharing their knowledge.
  • Atmosphere: A close-knit, technical team where we work hard without taking ourselves too seriously.
